Dorothy Kirchner Smith, 91, passed away May 19, 2014, in Austin, Texas, surrounded by loving members of her family. Dorothy was one of five children reared in rural Missouri by Roger and Lena Kirchner, a couple who valued total honesty, faith, hard work and education. Dorothy had two children, Karen Flanagan and Fran Arthur, from an early marriage, and she added two more daughters, Diane Likhite and Sandy Moore, when she married her beloved husband Ed Smith in 1959. Dorothy was a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Dorothy received her bachelor's degree in education from William Jewell College and earned her master’s degree in library science at Central Missouri State University. She had a distinguished career as a head librarian at Eastgate Junior High School and Oak Park High School. She was also active in the Missouri Association of School Librarians, and served one year as its president. She said that her greatest achievement was maintaining a stable and supportive home for her blended family. Memories that will last a lifetime for her family and friends were made at Ed and Dorothy’s vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks. She had a strong religious faith and was a role model to family, students, and friends--for strength, adaptation, endurance, perseverance, and moral integrity.
