Actor. Born in Demidov, Russia, he started his acting career as a clown at the Moscow State Circus. After breaking into Russian cinema, he became best known for his roles in the comedies. His many credits include "Andrei Rublev" (1961), "Stariki-razboyniki" (1971), "'12 stulev" (1976), "Dvadtsat dney bez voiny" (1976) and "Chuchelo" (1983). In a 1995 national poll in Russia, "The Diamond Arm" (1969), starring Yuri Nikulin was voted the best Russian comedy ever. He died at age 75 after surgery in Moscow, Russia.
