Phyllis Henson Sellen, a native of Haywood County, will be buried Oct. 25 in Arlington National Cemetery with her late husband, Lt. Col. William Sellen, a career Army veteran, who died in 2017.
She died July 8, 2019, surrounded by family in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she and Bill had lived for several years.
She was born Sept. 10, 1947, to Ira Lee and Lucille Kuykendall Henson. Her childhood was spent in the Burnett Cove community. She often spoke of her pleasant childhood memories of growing up on the farm that her granddad had bought in part with his World War I earnings.
Phyllis, a 1965 Bethel High School graduate, worked hart to put herself through nursing school and moved to Raleigh where she completed her BSN degree.
After several years in that profession, she became an auditor of pharmaceutical clinical trials. In that capacity, she made sure that many life-saving drugs were safe and effective before use by the public. During her extensive travel in that career, she met the love of her life, Lt. Col. William Sellen. They were married July 6, 2002.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brother, R.L. Henson and sister, Joann Ruff. She is survived by two sisters, Betty Inman and Mary Cogburn (husband, Bill) and many nephews and nieces.
She was fond of Bill’s children, who also survive her; Elaine Frye, Elizabeth Betty Cruz, Lt. Col. Patrick Barrett, Bill Barrett III, Lt. Col. David Sellen and a very special daughter-in-law-, Rona Sellen, who took loving care of Phyllis. There was a special place in her heart for the Sellen grandchildren who lovingly called her grandma Phyllis.
William and Phyllis were very active in the Knights Templar and traveled widely over the world to take part in that organization’s events.
Phyllis was a very special lady who loved to entertain. She loved people and she loved her work; most of all, she loved her family and friends.
