Served in the Revolutionary War under Col. John Sergeant, and is listed in the military rolls as resident in Brattleboro. Married Hannah Fuller, daughter of Daniel and Mehitable (Broughton) Fuller.
It is not known when he found his way to Dummerston, but he is mentioned in town records in 1785 "Dec. 24, Capt. Ebenezer Merrick made his "Pitch of land," 200 acres bought of Colonel Willard of Winchester; located on West river road, north of the village. Merrick also made several other purchases of land in that locality and resold to first settlers."

The Vermont Historical Gazette tells us that an Ebenezer Merrick (father of Capt. Ebenezer) was killed by a falling tree in Newfane, Vermont on Jan. 9, 1779 at the age of 75. Capt. Ebenezer was the son of this Ebenezer Merrick (b. Springfield, Mass., 1703) and his wife Mehitable Moore (b. Deerfield, Mass. Jan. 2, 1702). I believe that Capt. Ebenezer's father is Findagrave entry #178936579, but I don't understand why the burial place is in New York.
