A native of Chicago, he enlisted in the Navy on March 26, 1894 and was honorably discharged on October 7, 1899, having served on Constellation, Vermont, Richmond, Minnesota and Essex. He returned to Chicago and married Lydia Miller (b. 1883) on November 25, 1909. William worked as a solderer for the Liquid Carbonic Co. Per the 1920 Census, they lived at 2050 N. Keystone Ave. in Chicago, where William worked as a sheet metal worker. William and Lydia had five children who survived past infancy, Mae (Bittke), William Jr, Harold, Henry (d. 1920) and Viola Dorothy (Aitken). William Aumann, Sr., who was a member of the United Spanish War Veterans and the Sheet-metal Workers union, died in Chicago a month shy of his 61st birthday, survived by his wife and children. His son Harold served in the Navy during World War Two.
