John T. Bressler, 86, longtime Wayne county resident, and prominent in state and national governmental affairs, died at his home here Wednesday night. He had served as mayor of Wayne, school board and church official, county treasurer and state senator and was named by President McKinley as government director of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1897. He also was active in several governmental positions during the World war.
Mr. Bressler was a native of Pennsylvania, born on Jan. 14, 1849. He came to Nebraska in 1870, walking from West Point to his homestead in Wayne county.
He organized the first bank in Wayne county, in 1880, it being known as the Logan Valley bank. In 1885 it was recognized as the First National bank, which he served as chairman of the board at the time of his death.
Mr. Bressler was influential in persuading the state of Nebraska to purchase the old normal school in Wayne and establish the Wayne State Teachers College.
Surviving are his widow, a son, John T. Bressler, Jr., who is president of the First National Bank of Wayne, and four daughters, Mrs. O.A. Harker of Puryear, Tenn.; Mrs. A.T. Claycomb, Mrs. W.E. Von Seggern and Miss Dorothy Bressler, all of Wayne.
