Corinne Chandler Werdel passed away peacefully on August 14, 2002 at her home in San Francisco. She was 64 years old. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 19, 2002 at St. Francis Church, 900 H Street in Bakersfield. Private interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park. There will be no reception following the service.

Corinne was born May 29, 1938 in Los Angeles, CA to Philip and Alberta Chandler. At a young age, she and her family moved to Pasadena, CA. Corinne attended Polytechnic School and Westridge School, both in Pasadena, and became a proficient horsewoman and tennis player. She made her debut at Las Madrinas, Los Angeles and at the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena. Upon graduating from Westridge School, Corinne attended Stanford University and, in 1960 graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Corinne married Thomas H. Werdel, Jr., of Bakersfield, Califonia on December 27, 1960. They began their married life in Los Angeles and in 1967 moved to Bakersfield, their principal residence since that time. Corinne was active in the Junior League of Bakersfield and the local Garden Club. She served as director of the Stanford Athletic Board, the Cardinal Buck Club, the Garces Memorial High School Foundation and Garces Memorial High School.

Corinne was an active member of the Bakersfield Racquet Club and Stockdale Country Club. She spent a significant part of her time playing tennis with her three daughters, two of whom earned tennis scholarships to Stanford and one played on the professional tennis tour for ten years. She served as the girls tennis coach at Garces High School for one year.

In 1995, Corinne contracted Lou Gehrigs Disease and fought progression of the disease for seven years. After losing all mobility, she learned to communicate with a computer operated by her eyes and later, her brain waves.

Corinne is survived by her husband, Tom Werdel and their three daughters, Alyce Werdel (Jones), Marianne Witmeyer and Hilary Charlton and seven grandchildren, Cutter, P.J. and Ava Jones, Luke and Clay Witmeyer, Corinne and Celia Charlton, and her three brothers, Bruce Chandler, Jeffery Chandler and Stephen Chandler. Pallbearers will be Bruce Chandler, Jeffery Chandler, Stephen Chandler, Charles C. Werdel, Terence J. Werdel, Paul D. Jones, Ronald Witmeyer and Erik Charlton.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to California Pacific Medical Foundation, designated to the Forbes Norris ALS Center, 3700 California Street, 1st Floor, San Francisco, CA 94118. Phone (415) 750-2344.
