He was born September 3, 1924 in Puyallup, WA, and was living at Rosewood Adult Family Home in Federal Way, WA at the time of his passing.
Al was an ordained minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), and served in active ministry for 45 years prior to and during his retirement. He served parishes in Goodyear, AZ, Tama and Titonka, IA, and Chewelah, LaCenter, and Wilbur, WA. He also served as a part-time chaplain at the Tacoma Lutheran Home and Retirement Community in Tacoma, WA.
Al was a WWII veteran, serving in the European Theatre until his discharge in 1946. He worked in flooring and sheet metal prior to and during completion of his university studies at Pacific Lutheran University (then College). Upon graduation from PLU he attended Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, IA, where he received his master's degree in Theology. He was ordained at Peace Lutheran Church in Puyallup, WA. Al lived a life of faith and service.
He and Gladys touched many lives during Al's ministry and throughout retirement. Al will be remembered by many for his kind spirit and wise counsel. The family wishes to thank the staff of Rosewood for the loving care provided to Al and Gladys during the time of their stay.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2012.
Gladys was his true partner in life and ministry. Other family members preceding him in death were his parents, Karl and Elsie Gerstmann, two brothers, Karl and Herman, and two sisters, Gertrude Gerstmann and Louise Fulton.
He is survived by his sons Steve (Lorraine) and Tim (Kim) and their families, a brother, Eric Gerstmann, of Austin, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews.
