WORLD WAR IIRobert J. Philbrook, 73, former owner of R.J. Philbrook Heating Oil, died Nov. 27, 2000, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born in Rockland, Feb. 13, 1927, he was one of six children born to Henry J. and Nellie Post Philbrook.

He was educated in Rockland schools.

During World War II, Mr. Philbrook served primarily in the Phillipines, aboard the USS Shikellamy.

On Aug. 7, 1947, he married Norma A. Bartlett in Rockland where they resided several years.

He was described by his family as a hard worker who never sat idle and often held multiple jobs.
In earlier years, he drove taxi with Roaks Taxi in Rockland, kept an ice delivery route, operated Philbrooks Bus Line between Rockland and Augusta, drove a milk route for Grants Dairy and during that same period, built roads and fish weirs. For several years he managed Genthners and later Stanley's Service Stations, both in Rockland and for a time, drove a delivery truck with the former Community Oil Company.
For more than 30 years he owned and operated the R. J. Philbrook Oil Company until selling the business to his sons.

In 1992 he received recognition from SAD 5 for 32 plus years of service to the young people of this community as a school bus driver.

Since retiring he enjoyed camping and twice traveled cross country.

He attended the Owls Head Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knox County Oil Dealers Association.

Besides his wife of Owls Head, Mr. Philbrook is survived by three sons and their wives, William A. and Joan of Appleton, Alan R. and Renee, James A. and Suzanne; one daughter and her husband, Jane Ruth Philbrook Newcomb and Frederick M. III all of Owls Head; 13 grandchildren, Jason, Joshua and his wife Tamar, Adam, Amy, Annah, Abbie, Jessica, Cassie, Jesse, Micah, Jacob, Justin and Rachel, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burpee-Strong Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a celebration of Mr. Philbrook's life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. The Reverend Richard Reynolds will officiate.

Interment will follow in the McPhail-Hicks Cemetery, Owls Head.
