William P. Manis, age 76, of 1504 Philippen St., Manitowoc, died Friday evening, June 8, 2007, at his residence.

Cremation has taken place with the final means of disposition of the cremated remains at a later date. A memorial visitation will be held from 5-7p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2007, at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The visitation will continue on Saturday June 16, 2007, at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday June 16, 2007, at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, with military rites to follow by the American Legion Drews Bleser Post 88.

The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

William P. Manis, age 76, of 1504 Philippen St, Manitowoc, died Friday evening, June 8, 2007 at his residence.

Bill was born Sept. 24, 1930, in Fond du Lac, Wis., son of Lucille (Kappel) Manis and the late Abe Manis. Bill received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. On July 25, 1959, he married the former Mary Wiemann in Sheboygan, Wis. Bill grew up in Fond du Lac. Bill had a lifelong career with the YMCA. He worked in Madison for two years, later moving to Sheboygan where he met his wife, Mary, living there for eight years. They moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, living there for three years, then on to Des Moines, Iowa, where they lived for another five years, moving to Manitowoc in 1971. Bill held various positions throughout the YMCA Organization during his many places of residence. After moving to this area, Bill served as the executive director of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA. Bill had been active in coaching, participating and supporting many sporting activities. He was enshrined into the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame in April 1993. Bill was responsible for starting the Sports Booster Club at Lincoln High School where he also served as a member. He was the recipient of the Joseph Schmitt Speak-up Award given by the Chamber of Commerce in 1978. He received the YMCA Key Leader Award for Wisconsin in 2007. Bill also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Manitowoc Lions Club in November, 1992. Bill was a past member of the Rotary Club, Elks Club, Manitowoc Lakeshore Hall of Fame, the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and American Legion Drews Bleser Post 88. Bill was also an avid fisherman, enjoyed tennis and spending quality time with his family. He also enjoyed playing Santa Claus for over 30 years.

Survivors include his wife: Mary Manis, Manitowoc; one son and daughter-in-law: William (Bill) Philipp Manis II and his wife Diane, Manitowoc; one daughter: Kathryn (Kelly) Manis, Manitowoc; four grandchildren: Nicklas, Alexander, Ryan and Steven Manis, Manitowoc; his mother: Lucille Manis, Fond du Lac; one sister and brother-in-law: Nanci and Jack Sorensen, Trevor, Wis.; one brother-in-law: Charles Streeter, Cambellsport. Also surviving are nieces, other relatives and many special friends. Bill was also preceded in death by his father: Abe Manis; and one sister: Mary Ellen Streeter.

A memorial visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2007, at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2007, at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Steven Solberg with military rites to follow by the American Legion Drews Bleser Post 88.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA endowment fund.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Holy Family Memorial Hospice staff, University of Wisconsin Cancer Care Center at Holy Family Memorial, Dr. Lynn Baatz, Dr. Matthew Gentile, Dr. Gary Schmidt.
