Henry was the son of Johann "John" Adams and Anna Maria Jannes. He immigrated to America from Germany in 1848 with his father and they settled in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. Around 1851, Henry married Margaretha Misslich. They traveled to California with Margaretha's brothers during the Gold Rush to pan for gold. Their first child, Agnes, was born there. Then they returned to Waukesha County and purchased land with their gold.

"Duplainville - On Friday of last week, occurred the death of Henry Adams, an old and respected citizen. Mr. Adams came to this country at an early day and had accumulated considerable wealth.
