Joel Burch was born in Stokes Co, NC to John Lawrence BURCH and Judith (SOUTHERN) Burch. He was the sixth of nine children and the third of five sons. He came with his extended family to Monroe County Indiana in 1819 when he was seven years old.
Joel's father, John Lawrence BURCH, was a farmer. Joel and all his brothers became farmers as well.
Joel married 4 Nov 1841 in Greene Co, Indiana, when he was 29. His wife, Matilda Burch, was a second cousin, ten years his junior. Together the couple had three children:
William Burch 1842 – 1901
Hiram Burch 1843 – 1930
Mary Ann Burch 1850 – 1897
Joel lived to be seventy-one years old and died in Monroe Co. Oct 4 1883.
