Former resident of Indianapolis, passed away September 26, 2012. He was a devoted husband, proud father, loving grandfather, great grandfather, and a dear friend to all who knew him. He resided in Naples, Florida, but enjoyed spending summers in Leland, Michigan and Indianapolis.
Born January 6, 1923 in Indianapolis, Indiana, Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Bowman and Madeline (Fortune) Elder and sister, Anne (Elder) Schermerhorn.
Bill attended Tudor Hall with sister Anne in his early years and Park School through high school where he was the captain and quarterback of the football team. He took a postgraduate year at the Deerfield Academy where he also played football, and he attended Williams College until proudly serving his country during World War II. Bill was stationed in the Pacific and he earned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After the war, Bill attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania until his father's illness brought him home to run the family business.
Bill was President and Chairman of the Southern Indiana Railway and the Chamber of Commerce Building Corporation until his retirement. He served on the Board of Merchants Bank for 31 years, and on the Boards of Citizens Gas, J Lewis Small Company, Burr Paterson and Auld Company, Jefferson National Life, Somerset Group, Butler University, Park Tudor School, Orchard School, Goodwill Industries and Crown Hill Cemetery.
Bill was a member of numerous clubs and organizations. He enjoyed golf, spending time with family and sailing. Known affectionately to his grandchildren as "Skipper."
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Joan (Boozer) Elder; four wonderful children, William "Bo" Elder (Nancy), John Elder, Jane Elder Kunz (Fritz), and Mary Schaff (John); 12 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
A calling will be held on Saturday, September 29th at Crown Hill Funeral Home in the Celebration Hall from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Private family services to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Park Tudor School, Orchard School, or the Crown Hill Foundation.
