Former Salem Resident Dies

Word has been received in Salem of the death of Linn W. Nesmith former well-known resident of Polk county and Salem, which occurred at Medford on March 12, 1956.

Nesmith a veteran of World War I, was given an interment at Willamette cemetery in Portland with Portland post No. 1, American Legion in charge.

Nesmith was born November 10, 1891, at Rickreall. He was a son of the late William Goff Nesmith of Polk county, and grandson of James W. Nesmith, who was United States senator from Oregon during the Civil War and congressman at large from Oregon in the '70. The grandfather was with General Lane at Table Rock in southern Oregon in 1853 when a peace treaty was negotiated with three warring Indian tribes. Linn Nesmith also was a nephew of the late U. S. Senator Levi Ankeny in Washington.

At the time of his death, Linn Nesmith was employed at Camp White near Medford. In World War I hr was a regimental sergeant-major with the 23rd Engineers.

He attended Willamette University, and from 1918 to 1931, except for wartime service, was employed at various times in the Oregon legislature, serving as secretary to several legislators.
