A nervous laugh, a spray of curly black hair, a boho soul. Her space a mix of Indian tapestries and antiques. Perpetually finding her way in a world not quite made for her. A kind ally to me when life was not. An adventuresome chef with sweet chutzpah and generosity. The friend who laughingly taught me how to eat mangoes. Jamie, you’re missed, prayers said.

Trivia: I’d once asked Jamie if her family was related to the Fels Planetarium family. Now I don’t recall her answer, but can tell you probably not. Though both Jewish families, the Fels Planetarium guy was Samuel Simeon Fels, born 1860 in North Carolina and earlier, the family lived in Germany. Born around the same time was Jamie’s great grandpa Aaron, son of Meyer, in Poland. You can get technical and point out that on his citizenship application Aaron foreswore allegiance to the Russian Czar, and hence he was Russian but I’d argue back: At the time of Aaron’s birth, through 1902 when he applied for citizenship, and up to the mid-late 19-teens, Poland was “Congress Poland” overseen by Russia, but was nonetheless Poland. And on censuses (1900 and 1920) Aaron cites Poland as his birthplace. His death certificate states the same, so Poland it is.
