Layne was born January 31, 1952 in Powers Lake, North Dakota to Karl and Coyla (Watt) Hermanson. He graduated from Columbus High School, Columbus, North Dakota in 1970. He attended NDSU, graduating in 1974 with a degree in Engineering. He married Scharlotta “Lottie” Liebelt on August 27, 1983 in Harvey, North Dakota. He retired from Dakota Specialty Milling in 2018.
He enjoyed reading, telling stories, puzzles, going gambling, fishing, tinkering on cars, and was a self-made craftsman.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lottie, Fargo, ND; children, Aaron Mittleider, Bismarck, ND, Lindsey (Brian) Anderson, Des Moines, IA; sister, Laurel (Bo) Aki, Millilani, HI and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Michael and brothers, Delwyn and Gordon.
