The infant son of Abel Kent Jr. and Diadema/Deidamia Horton, Carlton called "Junior," arrived in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in 1791 when his grandparents Abel Kent Sr. and his wife Thankful brought their large family from Berkshire, Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. Abel Sr. and Thankful's immediate family included eldest son Able Jr. and wife Deidamia and their infant son Carlton "Junior" born in 1791, as well as sons Elisha born about 1770, John born in 1785, Carlton Anson born in 1787 and three of their daughters. Abel Sr's brother Gideon and his wife and their sons also accompanied them. The Kents settled on the old "Brace" Road, west of where the Wilkes-Barre turnpike crossed and about a mile south of the Newburg turnpike. The area in which they settled was Nicholson, Luzerne County. (This same area later became Gibson and then Herrick in Susquehanna County.) This was a journey of over 200 rugged miles either over mountains or on the Susquehanna River. The infant Carlton born to Able Kent Jr. and his wife was only 4 to 5 years younger than his Uncle Carlton Anson and the younger boy was called "Junior" in order to distinguish him from his Uncle and boyhood companion. Carlton aka Junior married Sarah "Sally" Griggs in about 1812. Sally was from Windsor, Broome, New York, the daughter of Noah Griggs and Polly Andrews Griggs who had moved to Windsor from Watertown, Litchfield, Connecticut between 1778 and 1780. Abel Kent Jr. died suddenly when Junior was about 21 years of age. As his parents' oldest son, he was left with responsibility for his new wife Sally, his mother and his four younger siblings. Junior and Sally had eleven children born between September 24, 1814 and August 27, 1835 including Mary Elvira (Dart), Abel (Marrietta Snedaker), Orpha Amelia (Harding), Theresa Christina (Redmond Dimock), Sarah "Sally" Jane (Asa William Dimock), Adeline (Hansell), Catherine (Craft), Silas Norton (Sophia Beattys/Bettis) and Alvin Griggs Kent (Mary Brown). After his wife's death, Junior resided with his oldest son Abel (b. 10/19/1816) and Abel's wife Marietta. Following Carlton/Junior's death in about 1861, Abel Kent and his family moved to Great Bend Township, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania and then to Johnson City, Broome, New York.
