(Queen's Medal and clasp). After transferring to the 2nd Battalion, he served in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and India until 1909. He was Brigade Major Nov 1912-Aug 1916 of the 137th Staffordshire Infantry Brigade. The Brigade was sent to France with the 46th North Midland Division in the spring of 1915. He was awarded the DSO in 1915 and attended a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in May 1916. He took part in the first day of the Battle of the Somme and used his authority to command his men to halt their attack at Gommecourt to prevent their needless deaths. In Aug 1916 he took over command of the 2nd Battalion KRRC and was killed in action near Nieuwpoort, Belgium on 10 Jul 1917 aged 35 years. He is commemorated on the Nieuport Memorial, Nieuwpoort, Arrondissement Veurne, West Flanders (West-Vlaanderen), Belgium.
