The S.S. Steel Navigator was a straggler of convoy " ON-137 " and was en route from London, England to New York City, New York with a cargo of 2000 tons of sand ballast and a crew of " 8 " officers, " 28 " crewmen and " 16 " Navy armed guards.
They were hit by a torpedo fired by German Submarine U-610 in the North Atlantic. The torpedo struck the ship between the #1 and #2 hatches, causing the vessel to settle rapidly by the head and to sink in three minutes after the boilers exploded. " 26 " Merchant Mariners and " 10 " Navy Armed Guards perished !
Antonio was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.
He was posthumously awarded the Mariner's Medal and the Combat Bar with a Star!
