José Diego Sepúlveda y Ávila was born outside Los Ángeles, Alta California, México, about 1818. He was the son of retired soldado de cuera José de los Dolores Sepúlveda y Gutierrez and María Ignacia Marcia Ávila y Osuña. His father was killed during the Chumash uprising in 1824 and he lived with his extended family in the Los Angeles area. Diego married the widow María Francisca [E]lisalde y Silvas de Rosas (bap. May 25, 1817 [SD Baptism 0...]-about 1898) at Mission San Gabriel June 14, 1843 and built a house in Orange County that is still standing. When two of his older brothers, Juan Capistrano and José Loreto, acquired a grant for Rancho Palos Verdes in 1846, Diego and his younger brother Ignacio joined them at the site and Diego built a two-story adobe house there. The brothers joined other Californios in resisting the U.S. invasion of California later in 1846 and Ignacio was killed at the Battle of La Mesa. After the war Diego became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848.
