A son of Adolph and Hannah (Steinke) Schumacher, both German immigrants. He attended business college in Galesburg and then attended the University of Illinois. He took up the study of law and was graduated from law school in 1904. He served several years as law clerk in the Illinois House of Representatives. He was an assistant state's attorney for Champaign County in 1922. In 1905, he married Minnie Nuckolls at Peoria, Illinois. The couple had four children: Willard, Margaret, Henry and Elizabeth. He died at his home, 701 W. Washington. An active Free Mason, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.
