Bill (O.H.) Benz of Caroline passed away peacefully on December 16, 2009 at the age of 89 years. Bill was born on the family homestead near Caroline on February 21, 1920, the 3rd of eight children born to Michael and Mary Benz. There that he grew up living the pioneer life, fishing, trapping, farming and logging. After serving in the army during WW II, he returned to the Caroline area where he worked on road construction with his dad. During this time he met Evelyn Evans and they married in 1950. While raising their family, they lived in Peace River, Alder Flats and Roger’s Pass while involved in the road construction industry. In 1960, they settled and built their home on his grandparent’s (Thibedeau) homestead northwest of Caroline. There he continued as a mechanic and school bus driver, among other occupations, while tending to the farm with Evelyn. He ended his career as a transportation supervisor for the local school district. He was a long-standing member of the Elks, a scout leader and a member of the Seniors Drop In Centre. Bill will be remembered for his love of family, zest for life, love of music, storytelling, fishing and practical jokes. He always lent a helping hand when called upon. His mind was kept sharp playing card games on his laptop and with lively conversations with family and friends. He will be deeply missed. He was predeceased by daughter Dianne Benz; siblings Louise (Albert) Bergren, George (Eleanor) Benz, Charlie (Blanche) Benz, Jim Benz, brothers-in-law Peter Chwaklinski, and Stewart Paisley. A celebration of Bill’s life was held on Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Kurt Browning Complex from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Lending Cupboard of Red Deer or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
