Mildred Elaine Howard passed away on October 8, 2019, at age 97.

She was born July 12, 1922, in Roswell, New Mexico.

Elaine grew up there and worked in the ice cream parlor attached to Shaw’s Grocery, her father’s store on W. 2nd Street. Her future husband John Truitt (J.T.) Howard Jr. would come in and flirt with her over a hamburger. They fell in love and married on December 12, 1941. Unfortunately, five days earlier Pearl Harbor had been bombed. J.T. survived the war and they had two children, Kim and John in Roswell.

Elaine worked in secretarial positions for the oil industry, ending her career as Executive Secretary for Navajo Refining Co. in Artesia, NM for 21 years. She lived a wonderfully full life with J. T. until his passing on March 10, 2007. Elaine then lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Roswell next door to her dear friend Mary Collier until 2013. At that time she moved into assisted living in Silver City, NM to be cared for by her son John and his wife, Terry, and all her friends and Bingo partners there.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, J.T., her father Lawrence Urban Shaw, her mother Emiline Ruth Shaw, brothers Paul Maurice Shaw and Lawrence Urban Shaw Jr. and sisters Mary Ellen Bergman and Marolyn Rose Whorton.

Elaine is survived by her daughter, Kimberly J. Brown (Don), son John H. Song (Terry), grandson Aavram A. Song (Lana) and great-granddaughter Summer Rae Song and grandson Corey L. Song (Jeanna). She has one surviving sister Carolyn Ruth Price. Elaine also has many surviving nieces and nephews whom she cared for deeply.

A memorial is planned in Roswell for the spring.
