HARVEY W. HILLYER AGE: 89
WOODBRIDGE Harvey W. Hillyer, 89, died Wednesday at his home. Born in Port Reading, he was a lifelong resident of Woodbridge. He followed the footsteps of his father, Albertus Hillyer, who was a plant engineer for U.S. Metals Refining Company in Carteret in the 1920s, and had developed a tempering process that had been displayed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. He retired from U.S. Metals Refining Company in Carteret as plant supervisor in 1972, after 42 years. He also designed and received numerous patents for metal-refining processes. Dur ing his retirement years, he became an avid reader and gardener, as he experimented with varieties of seeds and planting techniques. He belonged to Trinity Episcopal Church, Woodbridge, and was a member of Raritan-Americus Lodge 61, Free and Accepted Masons, Perth Amboy. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Helen Stegman Hillyer, in 1998. Surviving are a son, William H. Hillyer of Metuchen; a daughter, Beverly Diane Green of Clark; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will take place 9:30 a.m. Monday at Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green St., Woodbridge, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Resurrection at Trinity Episcopal Church, Rahway Ave., Woodbridge. Interment will follow at Trinity Church Cemetery, Woodbridge. Friends may call 5-9 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children's Specialized Hospital, New Providence Road, Mountainside, NJ 07092.
