Elinor Florence Arnold (27 December 1931 30 July 2009) Died at her home in San Antonio Tlay., Jalisco, Mexico; husband Ralph with her. She never recovered after a hip fracture in December 2008. Born and raised in Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa, daughter of Arthur Halferdahl and Dorothy Bowes, predeceased by sister Margaret and brother Laurie. She trained as a nurse at Ottawa Civic Hospital, then travelled and worked abroad. Laurie introduced her to another doctoral fellow, Ralph, in Washington D.C. at the U.S. Geological Survey love at first sight and married for 51 years. Ralph took a job with the Saskatchewan Research Council in Saskatoon in 1959, where they remained until retirement in 1989. Summers were spent at Waskesui, she would swim in all weather, lighting fires in the rain and burning marshmallows. She had an active interest in languages, spoke French, German, Spanish and some Russian. In the 1970s she and Ralph took a CIDA assignment for 4 years to Georgetown, Guyana. She travelled widely in her youth and later years, to Russia, South America, Europe, south-east Asia. It was dreams of summer year-round that drove their retirement plans. They moved to Vancouver Island, then to Summerland BC, before building the house in central Mexico 17 years ago. Left to remember her are husband Ralph (Mexico), children: Liz (Jim Carty; Albert, Nicolas) of Ottawa, Jim (Cathy; Zoe, Lauren) of Saskatoon, Nick (Becky Hsu) of Kiaoshung, Taiwan, and Alison (Danny Rafaj) of Vancouver. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.... ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. (Ecc.9&12)
