The above is stated on his marker. He enlisted with Company A of the 57th Regiment of Virginia Infantry on 29 May 1861 as a Sergeant. On November 2nd, the Secretary of War ordered him transferred to the Cumberland Light Dragoons of the Third Regiment of Virginia Cavalry - Company G. On 19 October 1863, his horse was killed in action at Buckland. He received eight hundred dollars for it. On 26 April 1865, Nuckols received his parole as a member of the Third Cavalry. I found no evidence that he served with the 20th Infantry. Men from Buckingham did form with the 20th early in 1861, but soon disbanded. None of Nuckols papers showed he went to Rich Mountain, or ever belonged to the 20th.
