Louise Brooks was born on April 2, 1912, in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the daughter of Walter Booth and Henrietta Louise Cromwell Brooks.

Her younger brother Walter Booth Brooks III was born in 1914; and a sister Angela Brooks was born on January 20, 1918, and sadly died the next day. She was buried in Saint Thomas Episcopal Church Cemetery in Ownings Mills, Maryland.

Her parents were divorced by about 1919.

In 1920, her father married Marian Lloyd Rice. Leonard Rice Brooks, half-brother to Louise and Walter Brooks was born on September 5, 1921, in Maryland, possibly in Baltimore.

Her mother, Henrietta Louise Cromwell Brooks married General Douglas MacArthur in 1922. According to a biography of General MacArthur, the younger Louisa Brooks and he had a good relationship.

Louise's middle name or first name may be debatable. She was listed as Evalyn Louise Brooks in her engagement announcement to William Ross Howard III, published in the Baltimore Sun on March 27, 1932, page 29. She has also been listed as Louise C. Brooks, particularly in the 1920 Federal census, when living with her grandparents. It was thought that C might stand for Cromwell, which was part of her mother's name. She has also been listed as Louise E. Brooks, particularly on a passenger manifest. It is not clear whether she was born Louise Evalyn or Evalyn Louise (or Evelyn) Brooks.

Louise Brooks attended Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia. In 1931, she made her social debut in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York.

On March 29, 1932, Louise Brooks and William Ross Howard III were married at Bethesda Episcopal Church in Palm Beach, Florida (now known as Bethesda-by-the-Sea), with the Right Reverend Nathaniel S. Thomas, Bishop of Florida, officiating. The marriage was announced that day, although their engagement had been announced on March 23, 1932, and was expected to take place in June 1932.

Their son was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was baptized on July 1, 1933. The godmother was Mrs. Atwater Kent of Philadelphia; and godfathers Mr. Walter Hopkins of Baltimore and Mr. James Cromwell of New York. (article in The Evening Sun, Baltimore, Maryland, published June 30, 1933, page 28).

On January 2, 1937, Louise Brooks Howard was granted a divorce in the Circuit Court, Worcester County, Maryland, and signed by Judge Benjamin A. Johnson. Mrs. Howard was granted custody of their young son for nine months out of the year; with the father granted custody for no more than three months a year. (article published in The Evening Star, published January 13, 1937, pages 32 and 28)

On July 12, 1941, Louise Brooks Howard and Lt John Gardner Tennent III, U.S. Navy, were married at the bride's home in Green Spring Valley, Maryland. Lt Tennent left the next day, on July 13, 1941, to join his ship in California. The new Mrs. Tennent was to join him in California in January 1942.

Lt Commander Tennent was awarded the Navy Cross for action in sinking a hostile submarine on November 10, 1942, near San Cristobal Island, Solomon Islands, as commanding officer of the Destroyer-Minesweeper U.S.S. Southard (DD-207).

On January 30, 1944, Lt Commander Tennent was killed in action when his ship, the U.S.S. Anderson (DD-411) was hit by a shell during the Battle of Kwajalein. Also killed were two ensigns and three enlisted men. Fourteen men were injured.

On March 24, 1945, Louise's half-brother PFC Leonard Rice Brooks was killed in the Netherlands and buried there.

On July 12, 1952, Louise Brooks Tennent and James O Murdock, Jr, were married on July 12, 1952 in Palm Beach County, Florida. They had one son. Mr. and Mrs. Murdock were divorced in October 1956 in Palm Beach County, Florida.

OBITUARY:

On June 17, 1965, Mrs. Louise Brooks Murdock died at Good Samaritan Hospital, in West Palm Beach, Florida. She was 52 years old.

She was the daughter of Walter Booth Brooks and Louise Cromwell Brooks, and had lived in Green Spring Valley, Maryland, before moving to Palm Beach, Florida.

She was survived by two sons: the older of Beverly Hills, California, and the younger of Palm Beach, Florida; her stepmother Mrs. Walter B. (Marian) Brooks, Jr., of Palm Beach, and two uncles, James R.H. Cromwell, of New York, former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, and Oliver Eaton Cromwell, of Switzerland.

The funeral took place at Bethesda-by-the-Beach Church, Palm Beach, Florida on June 19, 1965. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery, West Palm Beach, Florida.
