Son of Reverend William Braithwaite and Laura Elizabeth Pioou.
Edward Ainslie Braithwaite was born in Alne, Yorkshire, England, and studied medicine at Kings' College Hospital in London. He came to Canada about 1881, where he enlisted with the NWMP in Winnipeg, Regimental #1025, on May 7, 1884. Edward was made a Medical Sergeant that same year, and served in Colonel A.G. Irvine's column in the Riel Rebellion, travelling from Regina to Prince Albert. Edward cared for the wounded at Duck Lake and Batoche. He was later put in Medical Charge of the Flying Patrol (K Division) in Regina, which was later transferred to Fort Macleod. In 1887 Edward was transferred to Fort Saskatchewan, northeast of Edmonton. While serving with the N.W.M.P., he continued his studies at the Manitoba Medical College, and received his degree of Doctor of Medicine, from the University of Manitoba, in 1890. Dr. Braithwaite was discharged from the N.W.M.P. on May 6, 1892, and was appointed acting surgeon to the personnel of the N.W.M.P. detachment in Edmonton. In 1911 he was appointed Honorary Surgeon in the R.N.W.M.P. He had also served as Health Officer of Edmonton, Coroner for the North West Territories, and became Chief Coroner and Medical Inspector for Alberta in 1932, retiring in 1948.
Mount Braithwaite (2.134m), Alberta, fifteen kilometers from Grand Cache is named after Doctor Edward Ainslie Braithwaite.
Braithwaite Park, Edmonton, Alberta, is named after Doctor Edward Ainslie Braithwaite, NWMP #1025.

Ex-Coroner Dies December 7
Edmonton, Dec. 7--Dr. E. A. Braithwaite, 87, pioneer member of the Northwest Mounted Police and former provincial coroner, died in Edmonton hospital December 7.
His name has been on the nominal roll of the Mounties longer than any living man. He served in the Riel rebellion as a hospital surgeon.
Dr. Braithwaite was born in Alne, Yorkshire, and came to Canada at the age of 19. He joined the N.W.M.P. in 1884, and graduated in medicine in Winnipeg in 1890.
Dr. Braithwaite aided in introducing the St. John Ambulance Association into Alberta. He was provincial commander for a long period.
He was Edmonton's first medical health officer, appointed in 1892 and organized the city's health department.
He served as grand master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Manitoba before the formation of the province of Alberta, and for many years was deputy for Alberta for the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite.
