Charles P. Summerall passed away peacefully on 11/24/19, due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

At 88 years old, he lived only 338 days after the loss of his wife Kathryn to the same disease. Charles was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. Charles is survived by his daughter, Victoria Sudderth and her husband Terry, their children Max Fuerst, Chase Fuerst, Meggie & Stephen Gilstrap, Tyler & Julie Anne Sudderth, Max Sudderth and great grandchildren, Abbie, Zoe and Jack. His daughter, Sharon Henley, her husband Don, and their children Annabel, Will and Sophie. His son, Brian Summerall, his wife Michele, and their children David and Daniel. His sister, MaryAnn Reid, and her daughter Sheila Reid Brown and their family. He is also survived by his many beloved cousins. He is preceded in death by his wife Kathryn Minter Summerall, his parents, Evie and John Summerall, his brothers Troy and John Jr., his sister Evelyn, and various cousins, all of whom he dearly loved.

Charles was born on a farm in East Texas on 1/27/1931. He graduated from Malakoff High School and moved to Dallas to start a career in the Savings and Loan business. In Dallas, he met the love of his life Kathryn Sue Minter and married her in March of 1959. Education was extremely important to Charles, so he attended various business and finance schools to further his career ultimately culminating in serving as President of Southwest Savings Association. He developed an interest in commercial real estate and investments that led to many successful partnerships including developments with the Connell Companies and Wyndham Properties. He had the privilege of serving on many boards throughout his career of which he was most proud of his time on The Rosewood Trust Company Board and Northern Trust Board. He truly was a self-made man, and his incredible drive and work ethic led to a successful lifelong career in banking, real estate development and investments.

Charles had a lifelong passion for golf. His devotion to the game led to his greatest friendships, adventures around the world playing many famous courses, and ultimately brought him to his home away from home, Preston Trail Golf Club. He forged many of his deepest relationships while playing on the course, hitting balls on the practice range, or enjoying lunch each day in the dining room. Being the longest living tenured member of the club was a point of humbled pride for him in addition to his name being added to the Employee Children’s Scholarship Fund creating the Charles Summerall Academic Excellence Award Scholarship.

Charles was a loving and devoted grandfather. “Grandad” loved playing a large role in his grandchildren’s daily lives. He was never too busy to shuttle them to and from school, pick up Chick-fil-A, or attend their many activities. All the while beaming and telling them how proud he was of them. His grandchildren were the light of his life. To put it in financial terms, he felt kids were an investment, but the grandkids were the dividend.

Charles was a faithful, life-long Episcopalian serving on the Vestry and various committees of many parishes in the Dallas area.

Additionally, his family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers who were devoted to him and Kathryn in the last years of their lives.

Although Alzheimer’s took him from us, Charles will be remembered as a hardworking, giving, devoted family man who was a wonderful friend and neighbor to all who knew him. He lived a wonderful and full life.

A Memorial Service will be held at Northwest Bible Church, Monday, December 2nd at 2 pm.
