Sep. 1, 1900 issue of Illinois State Journal:
Cantrall, Aug. 31 - Barton Boyd, a well known resident of Athens, dropped dead this evening, while sitting at the supper table in the home of John Dirkes, one half mile east of Cantrall. Heart disease is supposed to have been the cause of his death. Boyd is a bricklayer by trade and was working at the home of Mr. Dirkes. He entered the dining room for supper about 6 o'clock and was in the act of placing some potatoes on his plate when he fell back in his chair and expired. Not a sound came from his lips and when his head fell back on his shoulders those seated at the table supposed that he was only ill. They were astonished to find that he was dead. The remains were removed tonight to his home in Athens. Boyd is survived by his wife and two sons, Charles and George Boyd of Athens. He had resided in Athens several years and was between 60 and 70 years old.
