From 1908 to 1912, he was city attorney of Lincolnton, member of the State senate 1915 to 1919 and delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1916, 1932 and 1936. He was assistant United States attorney for the western district of North Carolina, 1921 to 1925 and served in the State house of representatives 1927 to 1929. In 1929, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-first Congress, serving until 1931. A unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as United States attorney for the western district of North Carolina in 1931 and 1932 and as a member of the State house of representatives, 1935 to 1937.
