Jessie was the only child of "older" parents (at least for that time -- her father was 38 and her mother 29 when she was born). The family lived in Mound City, Kansas until she was about ten. She fondly recalled playing with her cousin, Maggie (Margaret Stansbury), who was her childhood "best friend". Maggie was the only girl in her family (she had four brothers). The reason for the move is unknown, but the family first moved to National City, California. Jessie spoke of going by horse and carriage to the train station in National City for the trip to the "city" -- San Diego. They later moved to San Diego, where they joined the First Baptist Church, then located at 9th and Broadway. She and her family met "Fred" Beck and his family in this church. Before she married, she was employed as a milliner at the Marston Department Store.

Social life for the entire family was centered around the church, and all members were very involved in its activities. Fred held many church offices, and "Becky" was active in her Sunday School class. Both had excellent voices, and sang solos and duets with the choir. Everyone in the family attended various meetings throughout the week (prayer, choir practice, band practice, elders meetings, etc.) The children belonged to the youth groups, and attended parties throughout the year and church camps in the summer.

During Fred's illness and after his death, Jessie continued in her church activities, thanks to the friends who continued to pick her up for meetings, etc. As she grew older, and less able to get out, Dick (who had lived with them since his divorce) helped with shopping etc. After he remarried, the three children here in San Diego hired a live-in companion during the week, and Katie & Willis and Jim & I alternated care over the weekends. Jessie had a series of small strokes, from which she recovered, but finally had a severe stroke, and had to be placed in a full care facility. She had been there less than a year when she had a final, fatal stroke.

Like her husband, she was a kind and gentle person, whose life revolved around her family.
