Irene was born August 21, 1913, at Dodge, the daughter of Edward and Regina (Goetz) Tschaekofske. She was educated in rural schools. Irene attended Hazen High School for a time, and graduated from Dodge High School. She then attended Dickinson State College and taught school north of Beulah and north of Dodge for a total of three years. On Aug. 6, 1933, she married George Bentz in a ceremony at St. Paul Lutheran Church, north of Dodge. They lived in Hazen until 1943, when they moved to Golden Valley.
In 1952, they moved to Beulah where they were partners in Hanewald and Bentz General Store. They retired in 1974. George died January 24, 1994.

Irene had been a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley and Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah. She taught Sunday school for 38 years, taught Bible school and was active in the women's organizations and Bible studies. Irene enjoyed quilting and sewing layettes for Lutheran World Relief. George and Irene loved to spend time fishing and will long be remembered in Beulah for their beautiful gardens. Irene enjoyed the flowers and fruit of Oregon.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, three daughters and sons-in-law, 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mabel Nelson, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; four brothers, Richard, Elmer, Art and Otmer Tschaekofske; and one sister, Irma Weisz.
