Joseph Matthew Dyer was the son of Jeremiah Dyer and Mary Clare Mudd, he was born in Baltimore, Maryland.
Joe Dyer's first wife was Alice Natili, the daughter of well-known Louisianian Baron Randolph Natili. They had the following known children:
Charles Chassaignac Dyer {namesake of Alice's uncle, Dr. Charles Louis Chassaignac, a prominent NOLA surgeon}
Randolph Francis Natili Dyer {namesake of Alice's father Baron Randolph Natili}
Jeremiah Dyer {namesake of Joe's father, Jeremiah Dyer}
Edwin Hawley Dyer (later known as Eddie Dyer, baseball great was named after famous railroad man and friend of his maternal grandfather, Edwin Hawley}
Joseph Goodwin Dyer {named for railroad man Joseph Goodwin}
Sam Tevis Dyer (named for Sam C. Tevis who was president of the Menefee Cypress Company}
Marie Agnes Dyer
Anne Dyer Berg Thomas

Joe became mayor of Morgan City for a brief period of time in the 1890's. He owned a grocery store and built the Dyer building in 1912.

The Dyers moved from Morgan City to Houston Texas sometime after the 1910 US Federal Census. It was in Houston when Alice died in 1919. By the 1920 US Federal Census for Houston, Joe had married Louise Joyner from Lake Charles. They were also living in Houston when Jere Dyer was killed by police officer Sidney Guidry in 1921. Jere was a barber in Morgan City at the time of his death.

Louise Joyner was several years younger than Joe with a birthdate around 1900; they had two known daughters:
Mary Adele Pasho Williams
Cecilia Agatha Dyer

After Joe's death in Shreveport, Louise married a newly widowered attorney named Andrew D. Keeney in the summer of 1930. He did not live but a few months after their marriage and died in December 1930. She then married a Shreveporter named Martin K. Nagle. In a dramatic turn of events, it was reported she had taken poison after fighting with Nagle in July 1934. She later sued the Shreveport Journal for running the article about her suicide attempt not for the attempt, but for them reporting she had filed for legal separation from Nagle. (Sidenote: She had filed for separation in April 1934 as was published in the local papers.} The Nagles divorced and no more mention was made of Louise or her daughters in the Shreveport society columns after 1934. The whereabouts of Louise and her daughters is currently unknown but for the Social Security death information on Adele and Cecilia. Adele died in January 1981 and Cecile died on 28 Sept 1990.
