JAMES R WHEELER
James R Wheeler died Feb 19 at his Southold home. He was 93.

He was born July 1, 1920 to Lucy (Mecorney) and James Arthur Wheeler in Floral Park. He graduated from Southold High School in 1938 and and went on to Stephens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, but left in 1942 to join the US Navy, where he served in the Pacific Theatre on the USS Briareus. After discharge in 1945, he returned to college on the GI Bill, attending St Lawrence University in upstate New York.

When his father's health began to decline, Mr Wheeler came back to the North Fork to help out with the family business. He obtained a certification in gemology and ran Wheeler Jewelers in Greenport for almost 40 years. Family members remarked that "many residents of the North Fork fondly remember Jim's cheerful assistance when selecting an engagement ring or a special gift". They spoke of how he refused to accept payment from clergymen or women of any faith for watch or eyeglass repairs, and described him as always being "quick with a smile and a good-humored remark."

When Mr Wheeler retired in 1985, he turned his attention to his many interests: golf, woodworking, oil painting and sailing in his own handmade craft. He loved animals and for many years he could be seen riding his horse Davy along the trails and beaches on the North Fork. He took great enjoyment being with family and planned any occasion for a family cookout or gathering. According to family members, he was a caring and dutiful husband, dearly loved his step-family and in-laws and was very proud of their accomplishments.

Mr Wheeler was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret (Thompson) in 1982; his second wife, Charlotte (Brown) in 2012, and his sister Ruth Myers in 1984. He is survived by his sister Alice Johannsen of North Carolina and numerous extended family members.

Arrangements were handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home. As per Mr Wheeler's wishes there will be no memorial or funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, PO Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 or 631-288-8400
