He was a graduate of University School, Officer Candidate School in Newport RI, and had a BS and MA in engineering.
He worked for Booz Allen, and founded two companies. His passion was sustainability in rural America.
His son, Nile, his mother, Suzanne Stratton-Crooke, his late father William Ruf and sisters, Marne Ruf and Katie Zarka, survive him.
