Mary Freeburn was a descendant of the noted Scotsman, Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus, mentioned in Sir Walter Scott's poem, "Marmion." Her parents came to America in 1833, and settled in Philadelphia before moving to Preston County, VA, now WV. ("History of Preston County," Oren Morton, 1914).

She married Maj. William Conley about 1846, in Preston County. The couple had six children, including William Gustavus Conley, who would become the 18th governor of West Virginia from 1929-33.

Mary is listed as a widow in the 1880 US Census, living in Valley District of Preston County, with her son William G. and daughter Mattie. She is buried in Gordon Cemetery, near Gladesville, WV, alongside her son, Edward Bunker Conley. Grave markers can be found. Her cause of death was listed as "tumor in side."
