Angela A Burke passed away on Sunday November 24, 2019 at her home in the Bronx, NY. She was 83 years old. Beloved daughter of the late Anton and Anna Wentz Hager, she was born on December 30, 1935 on a farm in rural Balta, North Dakota. They grew crops and raised livestock. She was an outside girl and worked alongside her father and brother Raymond in the fields. Her mom had 25 cows, they were milked twice a day, and she sold cream and eggs in town. They canned vegetables from their garden and bought boxes of fruit from the market which they canned also in mason jars. Angela went to a one room schoolhouse, with grades 1-8. In the winter, Angela and her sister traveled to school on a sled, pulled by a horse with their brother at the reigns. To keep warm, her mom made a quilt filled with feathers. She graduated from St. Leo's High School in Minot, North Dakota. After graduation, Angela moved to Denver, Colorado where she met her husband, Edward James Burke who was stationed there in the Air Force.
After getting married, Angela and her husband Edward moved to New York. There they were proprietors for fifteen years of Eddie & Angie's Imperial Food Market on Olmstead Avenue in Bronx, which was the hub of the neighborhood. When they sold their business, she waitressed in Manhattan until she retired. Angela was an avid reader and loved crocheting, but the thing she enjoyed most was spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughters JoAnn Fusik and her husband Paul of Monroe, NY and Barbara Khalid of Philadelphia, PA. Angela is also survived by her sisters Rose Smedsrud of Englewood, CO, and Kathleen McCarthy of Minot, ND. Angela has eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Edward James Burke, son William Burke, grandson Raymond Burke, and her two brothers Raymond Hager and Richard Hager.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3rd at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 Maple Avenue, Monroe, NY 10950.
