Diane R. Aschenbach Knapp, age 81, of Marion, went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 13, 2019, at home surrounded by her loving family following a four month battle with cancer.
On February 13, 1938, Diane was born in Bowling Green Twp of Marion County, Ohio, the oldest of five children of the late Benjamin and Mary (Hoffman) Sager. She graduated from LaRue High School in the class of 1956. She furthered her education at Ohio University, earning her Bachelors of Science Degree in Education in 1960.
One fateful night while visiting friends at Ohio State University, Diane met her husband to be, David F. Aschenbach, by challenging him to a game of pool. She bet him if she won, he would have to take her out on a date. She was a pool shark, growing up with a pool table in her basement, so knew a date was in their future. From there, their relationship grew at Ohio University, where Diane was a member of the ZTA sorority, and David was their house boy. A month after her graduation, they were married on June 19, 1960. Together they shared forty three years of marriage, and lovingly raised three children: Natalie, Melissa, and David S. He preceded her in death on February 14, 2004.
In addition to supporting David’s additional schooling and career as a high school principal, Diane was proud to work as a teacher in the New Philadelphia City Schools. She also was a substitute teacher with the Fremont City Schools, and sold real estate in Fremont for many years.
In 2006, Diane reconnected with an old classmate, Larry Knapp, at their 50th class reunion. Their rekindled friendship blossomed and before they knew it they were getting married in the mountains of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, on October 28, 2009. Having both lost spouses to cancer, they knew to cherish every moment together. They especially enjoyed traveling together, taking two unforgettable journeys: a Germany River Cruise to Amsterdam and Vienna, and a trip to the Teton and Yellowstone National Parks (where she fell in love with the mountains). They also were snowbirds, driving south every winter to Treasure Island and Anna Maria, Florida, with their dog JoJo.
A woman of deep faith, Diane was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Fremont, OH, Tellico Village Community Church in Loudon, TN, and the LaRue United Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Happy Thym Club (which her mother and Aunt Betty were founding members), Martha Horne Circle of Friends, “Between the Covers” Book Club, and the Supper Club (70’s).
Diane’s favorite pastime had to be shopping. She loved trips to Chicos, Elder Beerman, and to Estee Lauder (for their free gifts). She wasn’t afraid to fill an entire shopping cart with clothes to try on, and she was always looking to add to her huge shoe, purse and salt-n-pepper shaker collection. Some of her favorite hobbies were playing golf, card games with friends (especially bridge), and visiting greenhouses in search of new flowers and vegetable plants for her gardens.
Most important of all to Diane was her family and extended family. She loved celebrating all of the many accomplishments of her children and grandchildren, and beamed with pride for each and every one of them. She always looked forward to sharing the holidays with them, decorating her house all in red for Christmas, and renting vacation homes so her family could all be together for Thanksgiving.
Diane always had a way of making an entrance, dressed to the nines, looking like a “high” roller. She also overflowed with love for her friends and family, making her such a joy to be around.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband, Larry Knapp of Marion; Natalie Danhoff of Huron, Melissa (Todd) Carpenter of Bay Village, and David (Amy) Aschenbach of Roswell, GA; seven grandchildren: Ben and Alivia Danhoff, Abby and Josh Carpenter, and Summer, April and Zach Aschenbach; four great-grandchildren: Zoey Grace, Elizabeth and Mya; two step daughters: Jen (Alan) Conroy, and Kris (Andy) Webb; three step-grandchildren: Kevin Conroy, and McKinley and Haley Webb; three brothers: Sam (Donna) Sager of FL, Bill (Debbie) Sager, and Mike (Mary) Sager, both of LaRue; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her parents and first husband, Diane was preceded in death by two grandsons: Ryan Aschenbach and Andrew Carpenter; and a brother, Dan Sager.
Her family will greet friends from 4 – 7 pm on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, DENZER Chapel, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring her life will be held on Wednesday at 11 am at the LaRue United Methodist Church, 166 N. High St., LaRue, with Pastor Mike Raypholtz officiating. Burial will follow in LaRue Cemetery.
