She was born in a town called Wielkie Pole in the Rivne Oblast. Oblast is synonymous with "County". And yet another way to say Rivne county is Rivnenska. This was before the country of Ukraine existed. At the time of her residence there, it was the Russian Empire. Another way to say the town name is Velyke Pole. She immigrated with her family to Beauséjour, Manitoba through Montreal in 1903. They were Germans who lived in Russia. The entire region is also known as Volhynia. She and her family spoke low German. As children, they were taught German, Russian and English.
