Monsignor Charles L. Borgognoni, age 84, passed away Thursday at James Square Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born in Canastota and ordained in 1948, he ministered at St. Joseph's Church in Oswego from 1948 to 1949 and Our Lady of Pompei Church from 1949 to 1962 and was the Roman Catholic Chaplin at Syracuse University's John G. Alibrandi Center from 1962 to 1991. Among the many accolades he received were Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts Award, Proclamation of May 17, 1986, as "Father Charles Day" in Syracuse, State Assembly and Congressional Record Salutes to Pompeian Players, St. Thomas More Foundation Medal, Citation by Governor Mario Cuomo for service to Syracuse University and Syracuse Community, Simon LeMoyne Medal, Boys Town of Italy Man of the Year, Syracuse University Varsity Club Honorary Lettermen of Distinction and CNY Inter-Religious Council Leadership Award. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Amelia (Vignoli) Borgognoni; his brothers, Anthony J. and Robert F.; and his sister, Louise. He is survived by his brother, Eugene T. (Lorraine) Borgognoni of FL; nephews, Charles A., Robert F., Mark E., John J. and Robert Borgognoni; nieces, Mary E. Borgognoni, Gina M. Murphy, Patricia A. Catchpole, Kathy L. Ayres, Margaret B. Geise, Tracy, Louise and Lorraine; several great-nieces and great-nephews. Calling hours will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Pompei Church. A Mass of Jesus the High Priest will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of Pompei Church. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery in Canastota. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Msgr. Charles may make contributions to Donor Relations Department at Syracuse University for the establishment of the JOSEPH & AMELIA BORGOGNONI ENDOWED CHAIR IN RELIGION.
