John Thomas was born posthumously in Plymouth, 27 September 1745, the son of Lt. Col. Nathaniel Thomas who died in the Siege of Louisburg the week of his birth, and Elizabeth Gardner.

He was a founding member of the Old Colony Club in Plymouth.

He was a Loyalist and moved to Nova Scotia during the Revolutionary War.
