Carolyn was born September 19, 1937 to Roscoe and Ruth (Boyer) Weibel in Beverly, Bell County, KY. Carolyn was raised in the Kentucky mountains on the various grounds of the Red Bird Mission where her family ministered. By age three Carolyn was learning to play piano which inspired her desire to accompany singers in the church. She joined her sisters at North Central College, Naperville, IL and graduated with a major in Music Education and minor in English, and there met her husband Robert L. Berkey of Bourbon, IN. Bob and Carolyn were married in Beverly, KY on August 1, 1959. She served with Bob as he pastored United Presbyterian churches in Orleans, IN, Morristown, TN, and Larwill, IN. In 1973 they moved to Tyrone Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Fenton. Carolyn participated in church, school, community singing groups, and music ensembles of many kinds as a vocalist and as an accompanist on piano and organ. She was faithful in prayer, never wanting to focus on herself, but always pointing people to the Lord. She enjoyed gardening, sewing baby blankets, loving her family, being a trusted friend, and sending birthday greetings. As the foundation of congregational singing at Tyrone Church for over 45 years Carolyn fulfilled her goal to “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.”
She is survived by her son, Brian (Betsy) Berkey of Fenton; daughters, Cheryl (Kirk) Clement of Milford, Drs. Donna (David) Lowry of Holland; grandchildren, Carl, Lydia, Marcus and Eva Berkey; Allison (Andrew) Mack, Rebecca (David) Olson, Hannah (Kyle) Jacobs, Isaac and Seth Clement; William, Samuel and Jonathan Lowry; great-granddaughters Mia, Gabriella, and Evelynn; brother-in-law Alan Carlson of Highland, IN, brother-in-law Robert (Sharon) Giles of Royal Oak, sister-in-law Francis Berkey of Bourbon, IN, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three sisters (Miriam, Lorraine, and Ruth).
