Earl S. Kelly was a coal miner at the Prairie Mine near Belleville, Illinois. He was a member of the local 75 of the Progressive Miners of America. Earl was killed in a car accident when he accepted a ride home from Joseph Bingheim after work. He was killed on Mascoutah Avenue. The driver told police he swerved to miss a car that had entered the intersection and the front of the car hit the telephone pole, crushing Earl's body.

He left behind his widow, Mabel Harrison Kelly and four sons and two daughters. He was 37
