William O. Barker, a former resident of San Jose, died in Fresno county on July 20, 1888. He was formerly the proprietor of the New York Exchange Hotel in San Jose. He was survived by a wife, two sons and two daughters, and a brother, S. A. Barker of San Jose. The newspapers reported that he would ultimately be brought to San Jose "for burial beside his deceased children." (San Jose Daily Mercury, San Jose Evening News, July 21, 1888)
On Apr. 19, 1894, the San Jose Evening News reported that the body of W. O. Barker, who died in Fresno six years earlier, would be arriving in San Jose that evening. The following day (Apr. 20, 1894), the paper stated that the remains of W. O. Barker had finally been laid to rest in the family plot at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Five children are buried in the Barker family plot (Section I) according to death certificates in Oak Hill Cemetery records (indexed by History San Jose). It appears that four of the children may have been buried in Gilroy and were re-interred after the family acquired the burial plot at Oak Hill Cemetery in 1876.
