Writer for the "Wall Street Journal" as a reporter from 1901-1903, then railroad editor from 1903-1905. From 1905 to 1911 he was a financial editor for "World's Work". In 1911 founded C.M. Keys & Co. as an investment counseling and bond dealing firm. In 1916 was made an unsalaried Vice President of the financially troubled Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, and purchased a controlling interest in the company in 1920. Became president in 1929 following the merger with Wright Aeronautical Corporation, forming the Curtis-Wright Corporation. Eventually, Clement was at the head of 26 corporations, including B.F. Goodrich, National Air Transport, and Transcontinental Air Transport (aka "The Lindbergh Line", later TWA). In January 1932, citing ill health, Clement withdrew from his aviation interests, and retired from C.M. Keys & Co. in 1942. Established C.M. Keys Aircraft Service Company in 1942, and helped organize Peruvian International Airways, a South American firm which began service in 1947.
