Vincent Edwin Flynn, age 93, died peacefully in his sleep at St. Camillus Nursing Home in Stamford of natural causes on Friday, January 21st. Born Vincent J. Carey on February 9, 1917, in New London to James and Rachel Hammler Carey, he was brother to Kathleen, Olive, and Albert. He was adopted by Father Edwin Flynn, founding pastor of St. Clement's Church in Stamford. He was predeceased by Kathryn O'Brien Flynn, his loving wife of 54 years. In marrying Kathryn, he became a brother to Isabel O'Brien, Georgina O'Brien Shea, Florence O'Brien, Rev. George F. O'Brien O.Praem, Margaret O'Brien Edwards and John Robert O'Brien. A Stamford resident for most of his life, he and Kathryn also enjoyed many wonderful summers with family and friends at their summer home on Cape Cod. Vincent is survived by his nieces and nephews Polly O'Brien Morrow, John Patrick O'Brien, Mary Ann Shea, William B. Shea, John Shea, Alexander Edwards Jr., Jane Edwards Ajello, Marnie Edwards, and Robert Edwards, and their families. He is also survived by his biological nieces and nephews Marc Carey and Kathleen Benitez. Vincent taught military administration in the Army Air Force from 1945 to 1947.

He was a graduate of the Bulkely School in New London (1935), the College of the Holy Cross (1939), and Columbia University Teachers College (Masters Degree, 1949). He received his Teacher's Certificate from the Archdiocese of New York and was certified by the State of New York as a Secondary School Principal.

He had a distinguished career as an educator and administrator at both St. Basil's Preparatory (where he had served as Principal) and Iona Preparatory School. His nearly four-decade tenure at Iona (1944 to 1982) began as a Latin, French and English teacher, and ended with 15 years of service as Vice Principal under Br. Delaney.

He was an insatiable reader, particularly of mysteries. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching sports on television. Calling hours will be held Monday, January 24, 2011 from 9 am to 11 am at The Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home 2900 Summer St Stamford, CT 06905. A service will immediately follow at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Saint John Cemetery in Darien, CT.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Iona Preparatory School (255 Wilmot Road, New Rochelle, NY 10804) to support scholarships.
