Henry Horatio (Harry) Ledyard, 84, founder and president of the H. H. Ledyard company, wholesale grocers, died last night at his home on Sunset way in Ledyard Acres near Aptos. He had been ill for several months.

Ledyard came to Santa Cruz in the 1920s as manager of the Santa Cruz branch of the Keystone company, a San Jose wholesale foods firm. In 1929 after the liquidation of the Keystone company, Ledyard opened the H. H. Ledyard company offices at 24 Mission street with three employes.

The firm grew quickly and in 1932, the company moved to 53 Vine street in larger quarters. In January, 1953, a fire destroyed the food company warehouse. Then, the Ledyard company moved to the old Coast Counties Gas and Electric company warehouse on Sycamore street at Pacific avenue, the site of the new Prolo Chevrolet Center.

Once again, the company was hit by a catastrophic disaster as the warehouse was a victim of the Christmas floods of 1955, totally destroying the food plant.

Undaunted, the firm remained in business and in 1957 opened their new warehouse and office structure at 17th avenue and Kinsley in the Live Oak industrial area.

Harry Ledyard was a member of an extraordinary family. His paternal grandfather, Timothy Childs Ledyard (1822-1870) was killed by his guide on a trip to Central America. His father, Henry C. Ledyard, was a dentist and traveled around the world from 1871 until 1876 when he settled in San Jose to establish practice. In 1879, he married Elizabeth Cory daughter of Dr. Benjamin Cory of San Jose and they left on a 10-year honeymoon.

Harry was born Christmas Day, 1880, in Shanghai, China. At the age of 2, he accompanied his parents on a sleigh in a 3000-mile trip across Siberia to St. Petersburg. After spending the winter there, the family moved to Constantinople, now Istanbul, where they lived for six years. His brother, Cory, and sister, Maritza, were born there.

In 1888, the family returned to San Jose as Dr. Ledyard decided he wanted to educate his family in the United States. He practiced in Los Angeles two years before he died. His wife, a graduate of San Jose Normal school and Mills college, taught school to raise her family. Harry Ledyard worked a summer and fall in an orchard in Lodi after graduation from high school and then returned to work for the Sperry Flour company. In 1902 he joined the Keystone company and became a stockholder in the organization of the firm. He served as a traveling salesman, credit manager, and later, sales manager of the company before coming to Santa Cruz.

Despite the adversity of two major disasters, the Ledyard company kept pace with the growth of the community and serves as the major independent food wholesale firm in the area, serving both grocery markets and institutions. Despite his age, Ledyard maintained active management of the firm until a few months ago. His son-in-law, Albert Aboudara, is vice president and general manager of the company.

Ledyard has been a member of the Kiwanis club for 40 years. He was a charter member of the San Jose club and served as president of the Santa Cruz Kiwanis in 1936. He has been a member of the Masonic lodge and the Shrine for more than 55 years and was a past president of the Masonic Luncheon club and a former commander of the Knights Templar commandery. He was a member of the Garfield Park Christian church and was currently serving as a trustee of the church.

Ledyard had a pear orchard near Aptos which he later subdivided into what is now Ledyard Acres, one of the MidCounty's more beautiful areas.

He is survived by his wife, Adelia; three daughters, Mary E. Clark of San Jose, Alice Aboudara and Jane Glass of Aptos; two sons, Fraser Ledyard of Aptos and David Ledyard of Capitola; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He married Adelia Jarvis July 21, 1922 after the death of his first wife, Lillian Fraser Ledyard, mother of Mary E. Clark, H. Fraser Ledyard and Alice Kathryn Aboudara.

Services will be conducted at Garfield Park Christian church Wednesday at 10 o'clock with Dr. Carroll C. Roberts and officers of Santa Cruz Lodge 38, F&AM officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, San Jose. Contributions to the Ledyard Memorial fund at Garfield Park Christian church preferred.
