Married, Elizabeth Jane Hummer, November 21, 1861, Methodist Episcopal Church, Gettysburg, Adams County PA., at by Rev. G. Stevenson.

They had children: Mary R.C. McGlaughlin; Laure Kate McGlaughlin; Minnie Ann McGlaughlin who married Curtis Geiser; Clara Elizabeth McGlaughlin who married Michael Tate, and Fannie McGlaughlin who married Harry H. Ridinger.

Served in the Civil War: He was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg, November 5 as a private with Co. C, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 6" tall with light hair and blue eyes. He served with his brother Herbert E. McGlaughlin, who had been drafted. All five of the brothers served in the Union Army.

Served under Captain Eben M'Ginley, Engagements, January 30,1863- Deserted House, near Suffolk, April 13th and 14th, 1863-Skirmishes on Jamestown Road, near Suffolk. Arril 24, 1863- White House, near Suffolk, May 14, 1863- Beaver Dam, near Franklin. May 16, 1863- Carsville.
