Mr. Barnette was born October 16, 1929 in Charlotte, NC, son of John G. Barnette, Sr. and Gladys Yarborough Barnette. He was a 1948 graduate of Carlisle Military School, Camden, SC. He attended The Citadel. Mr. Barnette was a Korean War Air Force veteran and retired as a Grounds Foreman and Golf Course Superintendent at Charleston Air Force Base. A true patriot, Mr. Barnette was a member of the Executive Board of American Legion Post 166, and the V.F.W Goose Creek Lodge; he served as Past Chairman of Concerned Taxpayers of Berkeley County, and was a former elected member of Goose Creek City Council. Active in local organizations, Mr. Barnette was a Mason and member of Goose Creek Lodge 401, a member of the Scottish Rite and a Shriner belonging to the Omar Temple. He was Past Chairman of US Golf Course Superintendent's Association, and a past member of the Board of Directors of Carolina Golf Course Association.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Rachel Willis Barnette; four daughters, Yarboro Barnette Winkle (George) of Summerville, Theresa Barnette Reed (Robert) of Mt. Pleasant, Suzan Barnette Familia (Richard) of North Charleston, and Jeannie Barnette Singletary (Erik) of Sumter; son, John Graham Barnette III (Tammy) of Summerville; two sisters, Jeannie Barnette Auten of Belmont, NC and Yarboro Barnette Lloyd (Brown) of Knoxville, TN; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
His sister, Dorothy Barnette Carnes and two brothers-in-law, Oscar Carnes and George Auten, preceded him in death.
